Welcome!

This website contains information about my work as a Member of the German Parliament (Bundestag) for the Green Party (Bündnis 90/DIE GRÜNEN). In our fraction I am the spokesman for transport policy and the deputy spokesman for the task force “Environment/Energy, Consumer protection/Agriculture, Transport/Construction, Tourism and Sports

The range of information will continuously be expanded, so if you are currently missing something in particular or need help accessing the German content, please feel free to contact my staff. Even in English, if you prefer.

The internet pages for the German Bundestag give you an overview of when Parliament is in session and any other relevant dates and events, both in English and in French.

My Area of Expertise:

Ideally, every MP should be well-informed and have an opinion concerning every issue. In view of the wide range of issues we cover, this is next to impossible. Therefore every MP has certain issues that he or she has to be very familiar with. In my case these are Mobility, Environment and Fairness.

In my function as spokesman of transport for the Green Party in the Bundestag, my main focus is on transport policy, and its “green” manifestations. My particular passion is for the state of the German rail system (Deutsche Bahn).
As a biologist and biodiversity researcher, I am well-acquainted with the areas of ecology and the environment.
As a result of extensive research in South America, I am also very passionate on social issues, the problems of globalization and linked questions of fairness.

Mobility:

Did you know that less than 50% of the people in Germany regularly have access to an automobile? Nonetheless, the policy is almost exclusively oriented towards road construction. Similarly, air traffic is highly subsidized, even though the adverse effects on the climate are well-known. I have made it my goal to provide all people with mobility alternatives that are environmentally friendly.

Ecology:

Climate chaos, food scandals, loss of biodiversity and many other alarming news stories prove time and time again how critical conservation is to us. It is my aim to work towards sustaining our quality life for generations to come.

Fairness:

A prime objective of politics must be to create wealth for everyone that is environmentally sustainable, and to enable the slow, the unskilled, the unfortunate and all those considered as weak in modern society to live in dignity. I want there to be more fairness in our society, and it takes a strong government to achieve that. Globalization has so far resulted in an increasing gap in prosperity between the rich industrialized nations and the “Third World”. It is my goal to re-shape globalization to benefit both the north and the south.

About me:

I was born on Febuary 2nd, 1970 and grew up in Sauerlach, near Munich. After studying biology, I did research in South America, followed by a PhD thesis on biodiversity in tropical rain forests.
I have been with the Green Party for over 20 years, focusing on environmental and social policy. Until I was voted into the Bundestag in 2005, I was the spokesman of the Green Party for the “München-Land” district and worked for two MPs in the Bavarian Parliament. From 2002 to 2005, I was also city councillor in Sauerlach. Since 2002, I'm on the district council of “Landkreis München”.

Election Results:

In the 2005 general elections, 7.8 % of voters voted for me directly, in 2009 it was even 13.3 %. I was voted into the Bundestag via the party list of the Bavarian Green Party.

If you have any questions, criticism, or would like to address any issues, please write to me. Even in English, if you prefer. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours,

Toni Hofreiter.
